Travel Plans/Planning Co-ordinators

The requirement for there to be a Travel Plan on developments of 80 units or more is to make us all think about how we get about and how we can reduce our dependency on the car. It encourages developers to look at the available alternatives on each site so they can “design-in” cycle paths and storage; dedicated car—club spaces; bus routes, even footpaths and “design-out” car parking.

Travel plans inform residents of the options available to them, where the nearest bus stop is and the current timetable; the location of the nearest car-club vehicle and the cost of hiring it; how to find a car sharer and so on. This is great provided the information is kept up to date. The theory that residents will volunteer for the task and remain enthusiastic about it is optimistic at best; we believe that residents need to work with a dedicated Travel Plan co-ordinator.

We plan shortly to appoint our Green Manager to promote the company’s green credentials. One of their roles will be to act as Travel Plan Co-ordinator for our developments to work with residents and local authorities to monitor and achieve Travel Plan objectives.

This will only be possible where provision is made within leases and Transfers to include this as a service charge expense.

The travel plan co-ordinator role will include:
  • Preparing and issuing travel packs.
  • Maintaining current bus and train timetables on notice boards and the website.
  • Being enthusiastic about alternative travel options.
  • Facilitating car sharing through our secure website.
  • Promoting the benefits of the car club (if applicable) and/or public transport.
  • Promoting the use and benefits of cycling.
